To your future self…
To be the ancestor to your own futures happiness
I heard David Whyte talk about this on a podcast
He blew my mind
I mean the thought of coming back to the now
this day
from the future and saying thank you is incredible
He says we all have a younger self that did something that we are thankful for now
The call we made
The door we walked out of
Or into
The thing we said no to
The person we said yes to
All happened in a way, that makes us grateful today
It would have been a very different life
A completely divergent path
We corrected then and it changes today
What if we lived like we are the ancestor of our own future happiness?
We are anyway, even if we don’t want to be
We are as the poem says “ the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul”
I am so very grateful for the mouthy teenager that wanted out of Oklahoma to see the world
I am so grateful to the broken hearted version of myself in my 20’s that knew there had to be a better way, a better match
I am grateful that my 35 year old self said, yes to Michael and that she was brave enough to try again
She got into that hot air balloon to say, “I do”
I am also in awe of the strength my 40 year old self showed in the face of an unbelievable diagnosis and decade of illness and recovery
So, ok David Whyte I hear what you said and I like it
I want to live out the next years so my older self will look back and say, a big “hell yes!”
It’s going to take some mindfulness to get this down
It’s going to take some courage too
But, do I want my want my 75 year old self to smile and remember me?
Oh, hell yes!
