Life as Church

We were watching a Lisa Ling story on how many people have no religious affiliation. Traditional church just isn’t working for a lot of us. There is a swath of society referred to as Nones because of this. Her report was on a group called, Sunday Assembly. They are a global movement who gather to celebrate life and to focus on the good. Everyone is welcome. They meet weekly, have small groups and music. They share meals and do life together and they have three mottos that guide them.

It got me thinking about life and if our lives could be lived,
As church
Instead of a pew, what if the chair in your friend's kitchen was where you felt the most seen and loved? Sharing a meal with someone can be very healing.
How about a park bench watching kids play in pure joy.
In a waiting room with a family. These are all holy moments.
In a lot of churches there is a time where you greet one another and pass the peace. What if that happened at your grocery store and at work or the gym?
What if you radiated that peace for everyone you came across without the need of a common denomination? We crave connection. We were made for community.
But, there is no denying what religious trauma has done.  I’ve met people that are atheist, and when I hear about the god they were raised to believe in. It would make me an atheist, too.
I think a lot of what we are taught about religion is what our parents believed and what their parents believed and so on. What if we were to decide to believe something different?
Like babies are born in love and are perfect forms of joy and blessings not cursed by some ancient humans.
That we are made from Stardust and Mystery and the Divine runs deep, in all of us. We all carry Grace inside us too. Sometimes we forget that.
Be the blessing. Be the light that someone needs.
Smile when you walk into a room and watch how people respond.
Everybody in this country is as nervous as a cat getting a bath.
Everyone is worried about the election.
What if while we wait and in the days that follow, we live our lives, like church?
How would that look in your neighborhood, in your friend group and your family? What if we brought love and light with us everywhere, no matter the circumstances?

We are a complicated people. Inside that complexity we have all the different religions, different beliefs and things we all hold dear. Let’s see if we can just let that be enough. No need to make anyone into what you think. We are made from Stardust and Mystery and that means we are all the same on the inside.
Let that be enough.
Church as your life.
Your life as Church.
And we can all say, Amen.
