Lyrics of your life
There is a video that’s been going around of a guy on a long board
Lip syncing to the song, Dreams by Fleetwood Mac
It’s caused a sensation and lots of copycat videos have followed
That song happens to be one of my favorites
Has been most of my life
Part of the song goes;
“It's only right that you should
Play the way you feel it
But listen carefully
To the sound of your loneliness
Like a heartbeat drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost
And what you had
And what you lost”
It’s so good
It’s so haunting
It’s so undeniable
We’ve all had something great
We’ve all lost something too
My sister was eight years older than me and taught me the lyrics by saying them to me right before they were sung in the song
It was something she did every time we were in her car
My ability to remember words to a song is amazing and I completely attribute it to her
But, I’m now thinking about what the lyrics would be
For my life
For who I am now
Now that I’ve had so much
Now that I’ve lost so much
I am so vastly different from who I was a decade ago
And somehow I feel that I am still the same
Can both be true?
I’m forever grateful to have had my sister
I miss her everyday
Her laugh
Her hysterical stories
Her unconditional love of me
Lyrics were her thing
She drew them out of a song and knew them
She lived by them and let songs define her
She taught me about her through them
So, what can you learn about yourself when you let a song touch you
When the words ring true and you know them deeply
When you resonate with them
Even people who can’t carry a tune will sing loudly in their car or the shower, to the right song
It’s almost like it’s impossible not to
So, what lyrics would you pick for your song
What kind of music would you choose
It’s all available and also deeply personal
Will yours have longing for what you’ve lost
Will yours make you laugh about what you’ve done
Life is always moving
Lyrics can be a way to freeze time
To feel the way you felt when you first heard the song
Today there are songs that I still can’t sing to because of the tight association with my sister
I can listen and let a tear fall
I can tell her hello like she’s in the car with me
All because of the lyrics that we sing to
Let yours be a way for you to know yourself
And to let others know you as well
And sing it loud and proud
Even if you are out of tune because it’s the words and how they make you feel that matters
