United
Division is a notion as old as humanity
You might even say it’s baked into us
The need to make another, the other
We know by early childhood what teams our family roots for
And we learn early, who to root against
You can see it by what we wear on a game day
The colors say it all
Like I said, it’s baked in
If you were raised in church, you hear negative things about the “other churches”
They are always the ones, “that will never get into heaven”
It shouldn’t surprise anybody that this polarizing way to view the world, brought us the biggest divide since the civil war
The last two elections cycles
Who did you vote for, her or him?
Four years later, did you vote for the old guy or the other old guy?
If it wasn’t so sad, it’d be funny
We are a nation divided
Families ripped apart and friendships shattered
For people in office who will never know your name
But, now we have Putin
A proven enemy
A dangerous man with a lot of power and even more money
A maniacal menace to the world
Will we finally come together and unite against him?
What would a truly United States of America look like?
Would we finally stop fighting about masks?
How about the vaccines? Can we stop vilifying the ones that won’t or the ones that did?
Seriously
The things that divide us are way less that what can unite us
But, will we let it?
Can anyone see how nice it would be to back up from the hate and vitriol?
That a healthy discussion and disagreement can be a good thing
We learn from each other all are lives
We can certainly learn how we don’t want to be
And we can learn how to be better and kinder
We’ve all seen these past weeks what a real attack on democracy looks like and it’s horrific
So, let’s make an effort to reach out and not lash out
We are made from love and light and stardust
Let’s act like it and surprise ourselves with how kind we can be to everyone, even to those wearing the wrong color shirt
