What is your circle?
I was listening to a Mel Robbins podcast this week and she and her guest, Steven Bartlett were talking about a study where somebody drew a circle around an ant with a marker on a table and the ant wouldn’t leave the circle
It just walked round and round inside the circle
They did the same thing with a spider and they drew the circle tighter and tighter around the spider until one actually stepped a leg across the circle marked on the table and realized it could get free and they never could get it to stay inside the circle again
It got me thinking about what my circle might be
What’s the thing that I’ve drawn around myself that I think I can’t move past
The obvious choice that comes to mind would be the permanent nerve damage left by my illness from over a decade ago and the diminished capacity in my hands and feet, that limit my mobility, dexterity and balance
What if the circle is how I feel about my age
Or is the circle the fact that I haven’t worked in over a decade but I still feel like I have something to contribute somewhere to somebody
It’s probably be all of these
What’s your circle?
What have you drawn around yourself that you think you can’t overcome?
Where do you limit yourself in your mind?
Can you name it?
Can you change it?
What’s keeping you from living your dream?
What rule have you implemented that’s keeping you from a full and happy life?
What if today you stuck out a leg and crossed that imaginary circle and stepped towards the life you were meant to live
How amazing would that feel?
Terrifying maybe, but totally worth it I think
And shouldn’t we be as brave as a spider?
