Change
“One of the most extraordinary aspects of our humanity is our capacity to learn, grow, and change.” Sheryl Chard
I was having a conversation recently with one of my nieces and she was saying how someone had changed
She didn’t like it
I immediately thought, isn’t it good to change?
I mean aren’t we here to grow and expand and learn?
But, what if we are changing the wrong things?
I hear so many women say, “ I’m just a mom”
Are you kidding me, it’s the toughest thing to be on the planet
I’m guessing that when those women were younger, they dreamed of having a baby
They felt it was noble and something they were born to do
But, life and a lot of sleepless nights and self doubt crept in
You lose your sense of pride in who you are
When I was a kid I heard frequently that I was belligerent and didn’t know the meaning of the word, no
I’d like to think I’ve changed but with those two things, probably not so much
But, I do feel changed in other ways
I’ve lived long enough to see life go really great
And really, really badly.
Both extremes taught me to hold my days loosely
To look for the humor
To let go of expectations
I have an insatiable desire to control pretty much everything and trying to change that part of me, has a long way to go but I’m working on it
Do you feel like you’ve always been the same?
Is the high school version of you still front and center?
Or is that part of you so long forgotten you barely remember
I’m always curious when someone says,”you’re exactly the same”
Is that a compliment or a polite put down?
I’m never sure
I guess if there’s parts of you that bring you down
Drive other people crazy
Change that
That is the kind of change we can all get behind
But keep the important stuff
The things inside that light you up
That make you, you
For those necessities, don’t change a thing
You were born for a reason
Your life will change many times if you live long enough
The reflection in the mirror will change too
But, the you that’s really you inside looking
Wink and smile at that one, they can change the world
And if you are a mom, you already have
